The first in a series of columns about the Waterfront Project by newly re-elected Glen Cove mayor Reginald Spinello in the Dec. 9 Record Pilot is all about money (“Waterfront Project Will Boost City’s Economy”). Who could ask for anything more from the civil servant who wants to change the incomparable sightlines of our harbor and water views?
Mr. Spinello’s full-page article tells us in a dozen different ways that the plan “will boost the city’s economy.” Nothing about preservation, environmental or aesthetic. No mention of anybody being appreciative of, responsive to or zealous about maintaining the wonder of nature surrounding us.
The only greenery that interests the current Glen Cove administration is the color of cash that will balance the 2016 budget. That will be coming from the latest redeveloper, RXR, whose CEO Scott Rechler says he also has projects lined up for Hempstead and Huntington Station. Perhaps Glen Cove can be put on a waiting list.
