Back To School Donations Wanted

The Glen Cove Youth Bureau, in cooperation with the Friends of the Glen Cove Youth Board, is teaming up with local citizens, organizations and businesses to provide back to school supplies to disadvantaged youth in the community.

A backpack filled with supplies is presented to children who otherwise would not have what they need to succeed in their studies. Last year, 254 children in grades K through 12 received back to school supplies as a result of this effort.

Given the cost of getting ready for school, the need is greater than ever this year. For example, on average it costs $78 to purchase all of the supplies on the school list for a first-grader in the Glen Cove School District and $83 to supply a fourth-grader. This cost simply covers school supplies. It does not cover back to school clothing, shoes, coats, etc. For families living on a fixed income, especially those with more than one child, these expenses are often impossible to absorb. When the family forgoes purchasing school supplies, it is the student who suffers.

The Glen Cove Youth Bureau is collecting school supplies for disadvantaged students in Glen Cove.

Consider making a donation to this worthy project. Some of the supplies that will be collected by the Youth Bureau include: backpacks (no wheels); three-ring binders; thin and thick washable markers; no. 2 pencils; erasable and regular pens in (blue, black, red); colored pencils; highlighters; box of 24 crayons; zippered pencil case with three holes; small pencil sharpener; marble/composition notebooks; Post-its; index cards; folders; section dividers; glue sticks (regular and jumbo); scissors; portable three-hole punch; protractors;plastic page protectors; rulers; two-gig flash drive; dry erase markers; graph paper; erasers; Elmer’s glue; inexpensive headphones and earbuds; white out; kindergarten pencils (extra thick).
