The Glen Cove Big Red and the Vikings of North Shore took to the field on Friday, Oct. 2, for the 2015 version of the “War on the Shore.” Like two heavyweight boxers, the teams took to the rainy, wind-swept Mitchel Field trading touchdowns instead of punches.

The Big Red took the early lead, as Danny Neice recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff. The left-right combo of Glen Cove halfbacks Will Beglin and Tim Hogan put the Big Red out in front 7-0, covering 50 yards in just two plays. The Vikings stormed right back, on the arm and the legs of quarterback Ryan Aughavin. Aughavin’s 11-yard run and 40-yard pass to receiver Peter Bodo put the Vikings up 13-7.

Beglin put Glen Cove ahead once again, with a flashy 65-yard touchdown run that saw him reverse field twice, as time expired in the first quarter. But Aughavin answered with another Viking score, stunning the Big Red and putting North Shore ahead 19-14. From here the Big Red delivered the knockout blows, as Michael Payton capped a 10-play, 88-yard drive. Brian Shannon’s extra point gave Glen Cove a lead they would never relinquish.

Three Viking miscues would turn into three Hogan touchdowns for Glen Cove. Corey Dinkins and Andres Sican recovered NS fumbles and Hogan intercepted an Aughavin pass, and Glen Cove led comfortably at the half 41-19.

In the second half, David Bull turned a Fernando Aguilar fumble recovery into another Big Red score, followed by a Sican score, capping a seven-play 80-yard drive. Backup quarterback Joey Grella would run one in from 20 yards and then strip the North Shore running back and of the ball, and take it into the endzone for a defensive score. Shannon would kick his sixth extra point on the day, giving the Big Red a commanding lead. The Vikings continued to battle, though, and halfback Antonio Evangelista finished the day with a 20-yard score for the Vikings.

The Big Red, now 3-1, were home last weekend welcoming in the Golden Eagles of Bethpage and welcoming back Big Red alums at the annual homecoming game. The game was held on Saturday at J. Cameron Maiden Field at the Glen Cove High School. Details to come next week.
