The Glen Cove High School boys basketball team has gotten off to a great start with wins over Bethpage, Floral Park, Locust Valley and rival North Shore. The team’s latest wins captured the Bob Morrison Classic Tournament at Great Neck North High School on Dec. 29 and 30.
The first win was an unbelievable come-from-behind victory against Oceanside. Oceanside led Big Red 31-10 at the end of the first quarter. From that point on, Glen Cove outscored Oceanside 65-37, en route to a 78-68 victory, which set up the championship game against Great Neck North the following night.
Corey Dinkins led the way with 33 points and six assists, while Khalil Zachary added 31 points and 14 rebounds to lead the team.
During the game against Great Neck North, Glen Cove jumped out to a 21-point lead, only to have the game tied with two minutes remaining. Junior guard Kevin Ernest hit a huge three-point shot to give the team some breathing room, and great free throw shooting from Zachary and Dinkins preserved the win and gave Glen Cove the trophy.
This was the first tournament win at the Great Neck Bob Morrison Classic for Glen Cove High School. The team hopes to improve its winning ways against league opponents Valley Stream North, Lynbrook and Lawrence.
