Community Supports Glen Cove Senior Center

The Fabulous Fifties Fundraiser was held recently at the Glen Cove Senior Center on, a wonderful evening event. For so many of our seniors, the ‘50s were their heyday, as was evidenced by their enthusiasm throughout the night.

Arriving in poodle skirts, bobby socks, saddle shoes and leather jackets, the seniors started twisting to the tunes of their time, as played by DJ Joe Buscemi. Parked in front of the Senior Center were two vintage cars owned by Barbara and Fred Holzkamp, which set the tone for the evening.

Fab50_012315AUpon entry, all were greeted by the sounds of vinyl “45s” being spun by Howard Stillwagon on his record player. The dining room walls were decorated with Howard’s album jackets featuring ‘50s artists, and pink, gray and black balloons filled the room.

A beautiful jukebox was on loan from Rick Smith, from our local Piano Exchange, and students from Glen Cove and North Shore High Schools served the dinner.

In addition to dining and dancing, seniors were challenged to a ‘50s trivia contest by our own Lisa Craig. The success of this fundraiser was due to enormous community support. The staff and seniors of the Glen Cove Senior Center extend their deepest gratitude to the Parker Jewish Institute, Glengariff Healthcare Center, the Brookville Delicatessen, and Joe Buscemi for their generous donations, and to Geri Reichgut (photographer) for volunteering her time and talent. The community truly worked together to make this an evening of fun and friendship.
