On behalf of the Glen Cove Youth Bureau, I would like to thank all of the individuals, businesses and organizations that so generously donated school supplies and monetary assistance to this year’s Fill-a-Bookbag program. I would also like to thank Mayor Reggie Spinello for supporting not only this year’s drive, but also for his overall and continued support of youth programming in the city.

As you may know, each year, the Youth Bureau, in cooperation with the Friends of the Glen Cove Youth Board, collects back-to-school supplies for disadvantaged youth in the Glen Cove. Through the assistance of many, we were able to assist 266 students this year—155 in elementary school, 67 in middle school and 44 in high school. Thousands of items—including bookbags, composition notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, loose leaf, binders, folders, spiral notebooks and more—were distributed to our young scholars.

Every year, the North Shore Lions donate numerous backpacks filled with supplies. Special thanks to Diane DiClemente, Lions shopper extraordinaire, who spends many hours each summer hunting for back to school bargains and filling the backpacks with all of her finds.

Through the efforts and donations of many, this year’s drive was very successful; however, there are a few people and organizations that deserve special thanks. Over the summer the Downtown BID graciously spread the word at the Downtown Sounds Concert Series. Thank you, also to the Glen Cove Library, Glen Cove City Clerk, Chamber of Commerce and both of our local Starbucks for serving as collection points for donations from individuals.

We also extend a special thank you to the many organizations and businesses that made donations—in particular the North Shore Lions, First Presbyterian Church, Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection, members of the Glen Cove Senior Center, staff and residents at The Regency and The Atria, Astoria Bank, Long Island Cares, PSEG Long Island employees, SYEP students, Kiwanis Club of Glen Cove, Rotary Club of Glen Cove and Trinity Lutheran Bible Camp. Their donations, combined with individual in-kind and cash donations allowed us to equip for the new school year every Glen Cove student who came to us in need of supplies.

We wish all students the best for the new school year and are sincerely grateful to everyone who made this year’s drive such a success.
