The fifth annual Friends of Glen Cove Youth Board’s wine and beer gala was recently held at the Metropolitan. This 200 person turnout helped make this year’s event a huge success, breaking fundraising and attendance records.
The Friends of Glen Cove Youth Board is a volunteer organization that helps the Glen Cove Youth Bureau; all of the funds raised at the event went directly to the Youth Bureau. The Youth Bureau started in 1981 and provides services to approximately 1,800 kids. These programs include after school and summer enrichment programming (including Glen Cove After 3), summer youth employment, mentoring, positive youth development and family assistance, including a pantry that feeds 400 people each month, provides more than 100 food baskets to needy families on Thanksgiving and helps about 250 students have the tools that they need to succeed during the school year.
Gala participants enjoyed the jazzy sound of Les Stanco Group while sipping beer, wine and fine spirits donated from various distributors. The newest entrant, The Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, Abbey of Klosterneuburg wines from a 900-year-old vineyard, were poured by Fathers Nash and Gabriel. These were unusual and tasty wines from Austria.
Guests helped make this event the largest fundraiser by buying raffle tickets that went towards the 75 baskets full of goods and services as well as bidding generously on a dozen silent auction items. There were more than 125 businesses that helped make this possible. Another 32 sponsors were spotlighted that evening as well.
The night was emceed by chair and 10-year board member Roberto Telese, who said, “I want to thank the volunteers and community for the great job they have done in supporting our local youths.”
