The Glen Cove Cardinals 8U travel baseball team entered the Bellport Blue Claws fourth annual Summer Slam Tournament held Aug. 19 to 21, with the hopes of winning their first championship and that’s exactly what they did. Their championship win came Sunday afternoon against Long Island Crush after being undefeated in all three of their previous games played over the weekend.
The Cardinals ran up 26 total runs against the incredible talents of the Islip Owls (game one: 5-4, game two: 6-4), Bellport Blue Claws (7-2) and Long Island Crush (championship 8-6). Though these teams tried, they were unsuccessful in their attempts to stop the powerful bats, impressive base running and major league-like fielding abilities of this up-and-coming Glen Cove travel baseball team.
The Cardinals, under the management of head coach Carlos Figueroa and assistant coach Patrick Annello, are the latest addition to the Glen Cove travel baseball program. The coaches and players came together less than a year ago and worked very hard towards becoming a team very quickly. Spring 2016 was their inaugural season and they played in the Long Island Hot Stove League, one of Long Island’s premier baseball leagues.
In such a short period of time, the coaching staff molded the individual talents of each player into the makings of a real championship team. The Cardinals made it to the semi-finals in their spring season and the finals in their summer season and now with a tournament championship under their belts, they are going to continue their efforts and work extremely hard towards winning the fall season, which begins in September.
This is a team made up of 10 very distinct players, all with their own set of talents. They have learned to lose as a team, win as a team and most importantly, play as a team and have fun doing just that. Looking forward to their future successes.
