Zack Kleinwaks’ first college baseball hit proved memorable. Kleinwaks, from Glen Cove, started his Division I baseball career at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) with a bang by homering against Sacred Heart on Feb. 25.
It marked the first home run by a Bears player this season.
“He put a good swing on the ball,” NYIT coach Bob Malvagna said. “He has that power potential to hit the ball out of the park, at any part of the park. He can go opposite field with power. He just needs to continue his aggressiveness at the plate.”
“I didn’t really expect it to go out. I just knew if I hit it in the air, the wind could take it. As soon as I saw the outfielder go back, I knew it was gone,” said Kleinwaks.
Kleinwaks was a four-year varsity starter at The Portledge School. He was named all-league all four seasons. He made consecutive tournament appearances his final two prep seasons.
