Village Square was the center of action on Saturday, May 9, despite the cloudy skies and threat of rain, as the City of Glen Cove held its ninth annual Senior Recognition Day to celebrate the vibrant senior community, honor Glen Cove’s centenarians and recognize volunteers whose contributions keep the Glen Cove Senior Center a thriving social, educational and wellness center for all to enjoy.
Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello, Assemblyman Charles Lavine and Leg. Delia DeRiggi-Whitton spoke about the value of the senior community and presented a series of awards and citations to acknowledge the city’s resident centenarians (age 100 and older) and individuals whose service and dedication to the Glen Cove Senior Center and the community at large has been invaluable.
The city’s centenarians who were recognized were Irene Mencuccini, Charles Klein Vincenza Giordano, Harry Goepferich and Nadine Vorburger.
Irma Berkley received the Lifetime Service Award for her extraordinary contributions to the Senior Center.
The Rose Shoppe ladies from the Glen Cove Senior Center were given an award for Service and Dedication to the Senior Community. Recipients included Dorothy Conlin, Rose Marangiello, Evelyn Mercadante, Alice Savinetti, Carmen Katsikas, Jean Visslailli and Anna Ancona.
After enjoying a dance with centenarian honoree Irene Mencuccini, age 102, Spinello said: “Irene shows all of us the importance of keeping in step with your community and we are so fortunate to have the people, resources, facilities and business support to create an event that recognizes these very special members of our community.”
More than 225 event attendees were treated to a sampling of foods and beverages, music by Times Ten and giveaways provided by the event’s supporters.
Senior Recognition Day is sponsored by the City of Glen Cove, the Glen Cove Senior Center, the Downtown BID, NSLIJ at Glen Cove and the assisted living and nursing care facilities: Atria Senior Living Glen Cove, The Regency at Glen Cove, Glengariff Health Care Center, The Glen Cove Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, The Marquis and Sunrise Senior Living at Glen Cove.
