Glen Cove’s furriest residents are invited to participate in the fifth annual Howl’oween Pet Parade on Sunday, Oct. 25, from noon to 2 p.m. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. behind Glen Cove City Hall at 9 Glen St. In advance of the event, participants can also download a registration form at www.glencove-li.com.
People and pets alike are encouraged to dress in costume and participate in several contests being held. Prizes will be awarded in six categories: Smallest Pet, Biggest Pet, Most Exotic, Best Costume, Most Original Costume and Best Pet/Owner Costume Combo. All registered participants will receive a free raffle ticket to win one of three gift baskets.
“This is my dog Cooper’s favorite city event and as there are so many creative people in the Glen Cove community, I know the competition will be ‘ruff’,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello.
Past parade entrants have included dogs, cats, guinea pigs, parrots and even a snake, with pet costumes ranging from super heroes to witches and even a horse.
After the parade, which starts at Pulaski Street and goes down School Street, pet enthusiasts will have the opportunity to visit a variety of vendors in the Village Square. The Glen Cove City Clerk’s office will be on-hand to register dogs for a New York State Dog License. Refreshments and snacks will be available for sale for human participants while PETCO is providing free treats for the dogs.
The Howl’oween Pet Parade is sponsored by Glen Cove Parks & Recreation, PETCO and Scoopy Doo. The rain date is Sunday, Nov. 1. For more information, contact the department of parks and recreation at 516-676-3766.
