Glen Cove’s Summer Of Fun

To help parents keep their children busy, engaged and active this summer, the City of Glen Cove has put together a review of some of the city’s best summer programs and activities.

“From summer camps, swimming and rowing lessons along with educational programs at the Glen Cove Library or Garvies Point Museum & Preserve, Glen Cove offers a variety of recreational choices for children of all ages,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello.

Here’s a sampling of this summer’s offerings and please check the City of Glen Cove web site, www.glencove-li.us, for additional programs or program changes:

A Day at the Beach: Morgan Park and Pryibil Beaches: Beaches will be staffed with lifeguards seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Swimming Lessons: Swimming lessons will be offered for residents Monday through Saturdays at Pryibil Beach this summer season. For more information, call Glen Cove Parks & Recreation at 516-676-3766

Learn-To-Row: Mercadante Beach at Garvies Point, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Session dates: July 13 to July 23; July 27 to Aug. 6. For more information, call 631-645-6865

Glen Cove Summer Soccer Camps with the US Sports Institute at John Maccarone Memorial (City) Stadium, Glen Cove, for boys and girls ages 3 to 12. Session dates: July 6 through Aug. 21; times vary. Glen Cove Summer Sports Camps; including Pre-School Sports Squirt with US Sports Institute at John Maccarone Memorial (City) Stadium, Glen Cove. For boys and girls ages 3 to 12 who enjoy a variety of sports including baseball, cricket, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, football, soccer, tennis and more. Glen Cove Summer Tennis Classes at Stanco Park at the Glen Cove Golf Course, for boys and girls ages 5 to 14. Session dates: July 13 through Aug. 7; times vary. Registration fees are charged. For more information, call Glen Cove Parks & Recreation at 516- 676-3766.

Glen Cove Golf Club Junior Summer Golf Camp at Glen Cove Golf Course, for boys and girls ages 6 to 15. Session dates: June 29 to Aug. 28; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration fees are charged. For more information, call the Glen Cove Golf Shop at 516-671-0033.

Under the Lights Summer Basketball League at Stanco Park Basketball Court at the Glen Cove Golf Course. For boys and girls entering grades three through eight in September. Glen Cove Youth Bureau Summer Youth Activities

Glen Cove After 3, at Robert M. Finley Middle School for boys and girls in first through eighth grades. Session dates: July 6 through Aug. 14; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration fees are charged. For more information, call the Youth Bureau at 516-671-4600. GCYB also provides after care from 3 to 5:30 p.m. for a modest fee at the Carol A. Sucharski Youth Center for working parents.

GCYB Teen Program at Carol A. Sucharski Youth Center for middle and high school students. Session dates: July 6 through Aug. 14; Tuesday through Saturdays 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Special trips are planned two to three times a week and times vary based on trip destination. The Glen Cove Public Library offers a variety of summer activities from a lunch program with Island Harvest and a Summer Reading Club “Every Hero Has A Story” to special events celebrating Alice in Wonderland’s 150th anniversary and a Kindergarten Readiness Workshop in August. The Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club offers a unique summer program experience that will expose youth to a wide range of educational enrichment programs and activities all while having fun. Each week, youth will participate in outdoor sports, weekly trips, arts and crafts, dance, technology and special events. For boys and girls 6 to 15. Summer program dates: July 6 through Aug. 14; Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (non-extended) and 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (extended). Garvies Point Museum & Preserve: This Nassau County Museum on Barry Drive in Glen Cove offers a series of summer workshop programs with hands-on activities for children ages 5 to 10 from July 7 through Aug. 20. The half-day workshops are held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. This summer’s themes include Nature, Geology and Native American. ClayNation, Glen Cove’s very own paint-your-own-pottery, mosaic, and glass fusion studio, offers a variety of kid and family friendly summer programs. ClayNation offers a “Kids ‘n Canvas” program every Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m.  This instructor-led program, for ages 5 and up, will walk participants through a step-by-step canvas painting project. Each week will feature a different project allowing interested children to attend all summer. Also being offered this summer is “Popcorn & Projects,” a family friendly activity which includes popcorn, a movie and a project. JJ Glen Cove Cinemas offers a variety of cinematic experiences for those looking to get away from the heat of summer. From 3-D movie screenings to planned birthday parties, Glen Cove Cinemas has something to offer kids of any age. Discounted rate programs will be offered throughout the summer season, making a day or night out at the movies a more affordable experience.
