Gold Coast Little League Starts Season

Hundreds of young ball players took to the streets of Glen Cove on a beautiful spring morning as part of the Gold Coast Little League’s annual opening day parade. The children, their coaches, family members, Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello, Parks and Recreation Director Darcy Belyea and local dignitaries marched with pride to John Maccarone Memorial (City) Stadium for their season’s kick-off. To set the tone for the opening day festivities, Richie Cannata, a Glen Cove resident and former member of Billy Joel’s band, played the National Anthem on his saxophone.

As part of the ceremonial activities, Mayor Reggie Spinello threw out the season’s first pitch to Sabby Figueroa of the Mets.

“It takes a strong team to organize great game play and I appreciate the hard work and support of the Glen Cove Recreation Commission, our Parks & Recreation staff, the league’s coaches, team and program sponsors and most importantly, our young boys and girls who practice and play baseball or softball each week,” said Spinello.

“The mission of our league is to provide a wholesome, healthy activity for children using the ball field as a classroom to instill discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play,” said Darcy Belyea, director of Glen Cove Parks & Recreation.
