Karina Hernandez and Skye Schenck have been named Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club June Youth of the Month.
Senior Youth of the Month Hernandez, 13, is an eighth-grader at Robert M. Finley Middle School who hopes to become a veterinarian. Hernandez loves playing soccer and is on the school soccer team. She has been a member of the club for two years and has made many friends. She credits the club for helping her with her homework and encouraging her to try new things. Hernandez has connected to and bonded with Teen Program Director Chris Ricco.
“Mr. Ricco teaches us to be nice and to not disrespect anyone,” said Hernandez. “I have a lot of friends, I am experiencing great things and I am making memories I will take with me wherever I go.”
Junior Youth of the Month, Skye Schenck, 12, is in the sixth grade at Robert M. Finley Middle School. She enjoys art, science and math and hopes to study art in college.
“I would like to work in a hands-on medium like sculpting or chiseling,” said Schenck.
Schenck has been a member of the club for three years and attends every day. She enjoys participating in the art room or the technology lab and has made a lot of friends.
“I love the Boys & Girls Club and the group leaders are great,” said Schenck. “The club has a very strong bond where friendships are encouraged. But mostly the Club has helped build my confidence. I am more outspoken and not as shy anymore.”
Schenck, who has developed a special bond with several of the group leaders and coordinators, was one of three first-place winners in a Math Olympiad at school.
