Landing Students Research Birthday Mates

Fourth-grade students in Melissa Harechmak’s class at Landing School recently completed a Birthday Mate research project using Microsoft PowerPoint.

Jordan Howe researched professional football player Byron Maxwell.

As part of the assignment, each student was asked to identify and research a famous person who shared his or her birthday. The fourth-graders were then given a template to compile a hand written, rough draft using the facts they found on the subject they selected. Once completed, Harechmak helped the students to edit their work and assisted them in creating PowerPoint presentations using clip art, different fonts and a variety of backgrounds.

The children presented their projects one by one during class time, with many dressing up as the famous person they researched. Harechmak said the oral presentation was included as part of the assignment to help the children build self-confidence in public speaking. —Submitted by Glen Cove School District
