A Long History Of Theater In Glen Cove

Downtown Glen Cove has long been the hub of theater on the North Shore, with theaters on School and Glen streets. The Cove Theatre, at 90 School St.—currently the home of The Regency Assisted Living—underwent extensive renovations in 1949 and reopened that spring with a gala benefiting the Youth Fund of Glen Cove. Touted as “Long Island’s most beautiful and most modern theatre” the theater served as a showcase for both stage and screen productions. The theater later became Northstage Theatre. Down the street, the Glen Theatre was a vaudeville and movie palace that was razed in the late 1960s to make way for urban renewal; it has been replaced by the parking garage behind School and Glen Streets.

Currently, the theater at 5 School St. is under renovation by AMC Theatres.

Across the street, at 5 School St., Glen Cove Cinemas has been a cherished theater for those interesting in seeing a show close to home. The theater closed for about a year, in March 2013 and reopened under new management in the spring of 2014 after undergoing renovations. However, this past spring, the theater closed again, having been sold to AMC Theatres. The space is currently being renovated and is expected to open this fall.

Meanwhile, the City of Glen Cove is stepping in by holding a weekly Cinema in the Streets movie showing every Saturday night throughout the summer. The streets are closed to traffic so people can enjoy a movie outdoors on the big screen—for free.

Glen Cove’s ‘Cinema in the Streets’ Movie Schedule

The City of Glen Cove is inviting all residents to continue to enjoy free family movies on School Street on Saturday nights at 8:30 p.m. The “Cinema in the Streets” program was created by Mayor Reggie Spinello to give Glen Cove movie lovers an entertainment alternative while AMC renovates the Glen Cove movie theater with luxury reclining seats, a new concession area and more.

Here’s a look at the upcoming movie schedule:

  • July 22: Beauty and the Beast (2017)
  • July 29: Back to the Future
  • Aug. 5: The Secret Life of Pets
  • Aug. 12: ET
  • Aug. 19: Grease

Not only do families enjoy free family movies, but complimentary popcorn is also provided to complete the movie-goers experience.

“It has been wonderful to see so many people coming downtown to watch our wide variety of movies so don’t forget to bring your chairs and think about dining at one of our many restaurants in downtown Glen Cove before show time,” said Spinello.
