Glen Cove children who took part in the annual Mayor’s Snapper Derby at Pryibil Beach Fishing Pier this year learned firsthand why it is called “fishing” and not “catching.”

Under a hot summer sky, 80 children with parents and grandparents in tow struck out with only four fish caught the entire morning. Despite the lack of action, derby host Glen Cove Angler’s Club, the Matinecock Rod and Gun Club and two dozen other sponsors still supplied the fun, fishing rods, bait, door prizes and hot dogs.

Mayor Reginald Spinello handed out prizes to the junior division winner Sammy McCrindle and senior division winners William Centeno, Gianna Grol and Nicole Valensisi.

“Every child was a winner,” said Tom Manzione of the Glen Cove Anglers Club. “Thanks to generosity of our event sponsors each child received a free T-shirt, hot dog and soft drink and a fishing accessory.”
