Teens entering sixth through 12th grades are invited to join the Gold Coast Public Library Summer Reading Program, “Unmask The Superhero in Yourself.”

Teens receive prizes for every book review they submit, including generously donated McDonald’s or Glen Head’s Twisted Frozen Yogurt coupons, a themed bookmark, pin, earbud holder, hacky sack, stylus pen, water bottle and backpack.  In addition to these prizes, we are raffling off a gift card to Barnes and Noble each week to someone who submitted a review within that week.

In an effort to break last year’s record, the library has instituted a referral contest. Each week, the person who brings in the most friends who haven’t yet signed up for the summer reading program will win a free book of their choice from the library’s collection of new books. At the end of the summer, the person who brought in the most referrals overall will win a free haircut, donated by Sleek Hair Design in Glen Head. As long as supplies last, Gold Coast Public Library Summer Reading T-Shirts and Tote Bags for  winners will be available as well.

Also new this year is the Teen Entrepreneurial Academy, which pairs established professionals in the Glen Head area with teens to teach them entrepreneurship skills, with the hope that the teens will be able to start their own businesses while in high school, in order to pay for college.

Trainers include Nassau County Community College educator Gina Sipley, who taught “App Design” at the library and Cathy Elorriaga of Glen Head’s Northwordnews.com, who taught “Making a Website with Weebly.”

Other programs in the series include “Finding Your Inspiration” on Aug. 20, taught by Maryann Massari of Glen Head’s Purple Table and “Becoming a Full-Time Author,” on Sept. 10 by best-selling children’s and young adult author, Jen Calonita, who lives on Long Island. And for teens looking for community service, they can join the Gold Coast Memories Project on July 30 and Aug. 6.

Other programs happening this summer include a leather keychain craft on July 23 and an ACT/SAT Combo Practice Test on Aug. 15.
