Glen Cove clothing designer Donette Brotherson, the woman behind the DonJ` Moda brand, is taking a new approach with her first fashion show by showcasing clothing fit for more realistic body types. Under the theme Sensational Curves, the show will take place at the Glen Cove Mansion on Saturday, May 7.
“People tend to not feature curvy women,” said Brotherson, noting that her brand is unique in the ever-changing fashion industry. “Curvy women in the United States make up almost 62 percent of the population. I want to inspire women and allow them to have the ability to dress like a ‘skinny girl’ by offering a different perspective to high fashion.”
Born in Guyana, South America, Brotherson launched the DonJ` ready-to-wear collection in 2006 with a flagship store in New York City and has had a boutique on Glen Street in Glen Cove for almost a year.
“I saw an opportunity here and wanted to bring a different perspective to women’s clothing options and styles in Glen Cove,” she said.
Aside from designing trendy, elegant styles for curvy women, Brotherson uses a lot of bright colors in her clothing, which helps to set it apart. She said she finds most of her inspiration from nature and also looks at current trends.
“I see the beauty in the falling leaves and the change of seasons,” she said.
The event will highlight the DonJ` brand especially for the curvy women who demand high style in fashion. Curvy models—both professional and women from the community—will strut the runway, featuring top trend-driven styles from DonJ` Moda’s spring 2016 collection, as well as styles from international guest designer Wynetta Jones from Guyana.
“Her style is unique and I think she will do well here,” said Brotherson.
Local businesses and residents will also be assisting her with the show.
L’Immagine Hair Salon is donating hair services; salon owner Rosa Burzo has been a hairstylist for women and children for more than 25 years and has owned the salon on Forest Avenue for 16 years.
“She’s our neighbor, so we’re helping her out,” said Burzo. “It’s exciting; we’ll get to try new styles and meet new people.”
Burzo has never done hair for a fashion show before, but is active in the community and said she tries to help out whenever she can. She has donated her services for the St. Baldrick’s Day event and to Deasy PTA fundraisers.
Rev. Patricia Figuccio is hosting the event along with Hender Alvarado of GMA Martial Arts and president of the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce. Figuccio, a 15-year cancer survivor, founder of the Healing Angels Ministry foundation and organizer of the Classics 4 Cancer fundraisers, has made it her mission to raise awareness about alternative cancer treatments and spends her time giving back.
“Her whole vision matched my mission,” Figuccio said of Brotherson. “It’s a way for me to give to the community and to bring knowledge, especially to curvy women, that being skinny is not what inner beauty is all about. Knowledge is power and if you have the right knowledge, you have the power to heal yourself.”
Figuccio has worked with musicians, celebrities and dignitaries and has traveled the world educating others on the importance of good nutrition and how it relates to disease.
“This is a great opportunity on all levels of giving for Glen Cove,” said Figuccio.
The Sensational Curves Fashion Show presented by DonJ` Moda will start with cocktails from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by the fashion show from 8 to 10 p.m., at the Glen Cove Mansion, 200 Dosoris Lane. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase cosmetics, jewelry and clothing.
“This show is a collaborated effort with the extraordinary community of Glen Cove,” said Brotherson. “Patrons will definitely enjoy a sophisticated event and a uncompromising style that they have always desired but never received, fashion risk-taking and empowerment. This is a fashion party that will inspire everyone.”
