Adam Bonillo and Trinity Guzman have been named Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Month for March. This is the second time both youth have won this coveted recognition.
Bonillo, a self-proclaimed “gaming geek,” is 11 years old and in the sixth grade at Robert M. Finley Middle School. He does very well in school and his favorite subjects are math, reading and social studies.
Bonillo is also a truly compassionate youth who wants to pursue a career where he can help people. Being a nurse and providing comfort to patients is very appealing to him, but he can also see himself as a human rights lawyer defending the civil liberties of the underprivileged or disadvantaged.
“I really care about the world and I want to make the world a better place,” said Bonillo, who has been a member for four years and attends the club every day. “If it wasn’t for the club, I would not be as enthusiastic about learning and doing well in school. Being here has helped me improve my grades.”
Bonillo also credits group leader Ms. Giovanna (Deleon) for providing him with support and guidance.
Guzman, 13, is in the eighth grade at Robert M. Finley Middle School. Guzman, an honor roll student who does very well in school, plans on becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon when she grows up. Guzman is very centered, hard-working and has her eyes set on Brown, Yale or Harvard as potential schools for her post-high school education. She credits her father for being her greatest motivator and encouraging her to focus on education and to do well in school.
For her, family comes first and the strong bond she has with her family is apparent in her attitude, determination and interaction with her peers and the club. Guzman, who has been a member for four years, considers the club her second home.
“The club is an extension of my family and it is a place where I can be myself, I can be free and be with my friends without being judged,” said Guzman.
In addition to her dedication to school work and her commitment to the club, Guzman enjoys singing and actively participates in the club’s studio. She is also on the girls’ softball team at school.
