Annual LAXFEST Big Success


The lacrosse community came together recently to celebrate “the fastest game on two feet” at the Annual Glen Cove LAXFEST. Teams from the Glen Cove Junior League through the Glen Cove High School Varsity teams were represented along with regional competitors. Glen Cove Mayor Reggie Spinello joined in on the event’s festivities by conducting the coin toss for the boys’ varsity game and spending time with the teams’ players and coaches.

Highlights of the day included the Big Red Varsity Girls Lacrosse game against Great Neck North. The girls showed great teamwork and determination throughout the entire game. Leading the attack with five points each were Selena Guastella and Taylah Hudson. Alyssa Zangari scored three goals with one assist, along with Catherine Hatala (two goals), Synella Gonzales (one goal), Katherine Willson (one goal) and Yenifer Molina (two assists). Great defense was played by Rosa Pangari, Jenny Armstrong, Michelle Melfi, Erika Fonseca and Lindsey Payton, which allowed for very few shots on goal. Goalie Karla Correa had three saves. Adding to the game and Glen Cove’s 13-4 victory, with their speed and tenacity, were Tristyn Hudson, Ariana Morrocu, Steffany Figueroa and Lauren Rizzo.

The Big Red Boys Varsity team then took the field for their game against Roosevelt. Big Red had a slow start as they trailed Roosevelt’s Rough Riders 3-1 early in the game, but it wasn’t long before they tied the score and went on to an impressive 15-9 victory.

Geoffrey Field led the Big Red scorers with six goals and one assist, while Michael Payton added three goals and an assist. Steven King scored his first career goal, but didn’t stop there and would add two more on the day. Michael Hatala, Sha Letellier and Dante Castillo also scored goals for the Big Red and Joey Cappiello and Brandon Leon added assists.
