Head down to any Long Island beach at sunset this summer, and you’re bound to see some volleyball. Take part in the action this year by signing up for one of the recreational or competitive weekly beach leagues and tournaments that offer a laid back but exciting atmosphere for experienced players and newbies alike.

Here’s a list of the groups offering outdoor summer volleyball:

Long Island Volleyball Association
Offering a place to hang out with friends, meet new people, and play some volleyball while listening to music, LIVA hosts beach volleyball leagues at Jones Beach, Robert Moses and Cedar Beach for the 20th year. Enter to play with either four or six people, and choose from the Co-ed, female or male leagues and recreational or competitive category. Juniors can also participate in their own division. The second session of the summer runs from July 22 to Sept., and the cost ranges depending on the team type you register with.

Volleyball Long Island (VBLI)
In 2006, Volleyball in the Park was created to bring players together for tournaments on the grass, on the beach and indoors. The group plans more than 150 tournaments per year for juniors, co-ed teams, all-female or all-male teams and gender neutral participants.

Some tournaments are played for a cash prize, while others are recreational. The tournaments typically begin at 9 a.m. at Eisenhower Park. Participants can register online. Costs range depending on the team type.

East End Volleyball
Hosting multiple tournaments for adult and junior athletes alike, this Long Beach-based group has been offering a place for volleyball players to get in the sand since the early 1990s. Most tournaments are multi-day, with some offering a cash prize for the winners. The tournaments have a variety of divisions depending on age, gender and team size. Interested athletes can register online. Tournaments require that participants have a Volley America membership.

Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament
Held this year on July 14 for six-player teams and July 15 for four-player teams, the Jones Beach State Park Volleyball Tournament is currently open for registration. Teams can register under “just for fun,” “intermediate” or “skilled” to assist the organizers with seeding. Teams can submit their registration in-person at the Long Island State Park Headquarters in Belmont, via email to, or by mailing it to P.O. Box 247, Babylon, NY, 11702.
