Two Glen Cove residents were appointed to serve as police officers in the Glen Cove Police Department on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the Glen Cove City Council meeting. Officers Matthew Meli and Gregory Denk, who both served in the New York Police Department (NYPD), were hired to replace Glen Cove police officers set to retire this year.

Denk, a graduate from St. John’s University with a degree in criminal justice, served as an officer in the NYPD since 2009 and was an anti-crime supervisor in the 102nd precinct. Meli has been an NYPD officer since 2015 and is a graduate of Siena College with a major in political science.

“Officers at the City of Glen Cove take great pride in what we do and we are proud of our consistent top rankings in national polls that deem Glen Cove as one of the safest cities in New York and the United States,” said Glen Cove Police Chief William Whitton. “We expect a lot out of Gregory Denk and Matthew Meli and I am sure we are going to get it as both officers come highly recommended by their commands.”
